· Admissions requirements differ between graduate programs. Visit the Programs pagefor specific requirements for your desired program.

· An applicant may apply to more than one graduate program simultaneously, but must provide separate applications and fees. You will only need to submit one set of credentials (i.e., transcripts, test score, letters of recommendation, etc.) regardless of the number of programs you wish to apply to at UMass.

· The Application also represents an application for an assistantship/fellowship; no separate application is required.

Prerequisite Degrees

An applicant to the Graduate School must hold a baccalaureate degree earned in the United States or a comparable non-U.S. degree/diploma before being allowed to enroll in any graduate program at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

Required Materials

A completed Application Form.

A $75 application fee. This fee cannot be waived or deferred.

International Student Sponsor Statement is required of all international students.

One official transcript from all colleges/universities attended, undergraduate and graduate, where 6 or more credits were taken are required. We will accept them mailed directly from the college/university or submitted in sealed envelopes. If the official transcripts and/or degree certificate(s) are not in English, notarized English language translations in duplicate must be submitted. Do not list colleges/universities where 5 or fewer credits were taken.

Letters of recommendation (academic references) from two (2) professors or instructors who have taught you in courses in the field you are applying to here. All recommendations will be considered confidential unless the applicant doesn't waive his/her right of access.

Scores from the following standard examinations:

English Language Requirement 

In addition to meeting academic requirements, applicants whose native language is not English must prove their ability to speak and understand English.

The minimum TOEFL score as set by the Graduate Council is 80, although many graduate programs expect higher scores for admission. The University of Massachusetts Amherst also accepts the IELTS. The minimum IELTS combined score required for admission is 6.5.TOEFL and IELTS scores are valid for two years from anticipated date of entrance. PTE is also acceptable. The official test scores must be mailed to the Graduate Student Service Center.
