GMAT/GRE: How we think about your score
We promised that wed be a bit more transparent about the GMAT/GRE issue. Weve said for a while now that not only do we accept both tests, but we are agnostic about our preference. So here are some numbers. Please dont over-crunch.
Its important to note that candidates this year will NOT have an option to submit both tests. We need to officially verify scores and prefer to do it for only one test per candidate.
Those are the numbers, but the reasoning behind how we look at the scores is probably important for you to understand. We care less about the overall score than we do about the components. And we look at the subscores in the context of the candidates profile.
For example, an engineer with top grades whos been doing highly quantitative work doesnt need a high GMAT/GRE-Q to convince us he/she is capable of doing the quantitative work at HBS. But an English major whose transcript shows no quantitative coursework and has not done anything quantitative professionally or in post-college academics would be helped by a strong GMAT/GRE quant score. The corollary is true too: candidates who dont have a background that demonstrates extensive practice in reading and writing may be helped by strong verbal subscores.
Another important reminder: every candidate needs to submit EITHER the GMAT or GRE at the time of application. We dont accept LSATs, MCATs, SATs or the fact that you had exceptional undergraduate grades. On our application, you input the unofficial score - the official score report can reach us after the deadline.

GMAT/GRE:
GMAT
844
8288
GRE
81
1115

Submitting SAT Subject Tests
While we normally require two SAT Subject Tests, you may apply without them if the cost of the tests represents a financial hardship or if you prefer to have your application considered without them. Standardized testing is only one component of our holistic admissions process and your application will be evaluated on the basis of all submitted information.
Standardized tests are best viewed as rough yardsticks of academic progress which are greatly affected by academic opportunity. This article from the Harvard Gazette has more information about standardized tests, test preparation and the changing SAT.

How subject tests are considered
Subject Tests can be helpful both for admissions and course placement purposes. Students whose first language is not English and those less familiar with standardized tests such as the SAT or ACT can often demonstrate their academic progress more effectively by also submitting Subject Tests. International students generally benefit from submitting Subject Tests and should take them if possible as they are unlikely to be admitted on the basis of SAT or ACT alone.
The decision whether to take Subject Tests is entirely up to you. You should ask yourself whether other academic credentials including, but not limited to AP results, IB marks, A Levels grades, etc., adequately represent your suitability for studying at Harvard. If there is any doubt, you should take two Subject Tests. Official scores should be sent if possible but can be forwarded after matriculation if expense is a consideration.

Role at Harvard
Subject Test results can be used to help assess which course levels are appropriate to take at Harvard and can enable you to pass our language requirement (700 or better on a language Subject Test) and take advanced courses from among our 80+ foreign languages. Other standardized tests can also be used to meet our language requirement, for example, with a 7 in a Higher Level IB language exam or a 5 in an AP language exam or by successfully passing a placement test upon arriving at Harvard.
Standardized tests can also be used to apply for Advanced Standing, which offers the possibility of graduating in three years and/or receiving a Masters degree in the fourth year. Students scoring 5 on four or more on certain Advancement Placement Tests or 7 on three International Baccalaureate Higher Level Tests may be eligible for Advanced Standing if they meet certain other criteria during their first year of study at Harvard. However, very few students choose to graduate in three years and instead use the full four years to take advantage of Harvards many academic, extracurricular and other opportunities.
