If you are entering Japan as an international student at Gunma University, you are supposed to follow the procedures indicated below to obtain your visa. It takes one to three months to acquire a Certificate of Eligibility for a Status of Residence issued by the Tokyo Regional Immigration Bureau. It is recommended that you begin the procedures promptly after you have been notified of your admittance.

Entering Japan as a postgraduate.
1.Contact a professor or the teacher of the university laboratory in which you plan to enroll, in order to receive his/her letter of informal approval of acceptance.

4.Take an entrance examination (or screening of the documents) to satisfy the Gunma University requirements for making the admission decision.
5.Pay the Gunma University entrance fee of 282,000.
6.Gunma University issues a Certificate of Enrollment.
7.Gunma University submits your application form to the Immigration Bureau by proxy.
8.The Immigration Bureau issues the Certificate of Eligibility for a Status of Residence and sends it to Gunma University in one or two months.
Gunma University sends this original certificate to you via EMS (Express Mail Service). (It usually takes about one week, though this may vary depending upon each country.)
9.Upon receiving your certificate, apply for a visa at your nearest Japanese consulate.
10.Once your visa has been granted, begin preparations to come to Japan. Inform Gunma University of your arrival date once it is fixed.

4.Pay the Gunma University entrance fee of 84,600.

7.The Immigration Bureau issues the Certificate of Eligibility for a Status of Residence and sends it to Gunma University in one to three months.

二、For students already living in Japan and entering GU

Procedures to change status of residence
You will need to change your status of residence if you are entering Gunma University after having been enrolled at a Japanese language school or another school in Japan (and your status of residence is Pre-college Student), or after having been employed and your status of residence is Specialist in Humanities/International Services or Engineer, or if your status of residence is Dependent, etc. Please visit the nearest Immigration Bureau to begin the necessary procedures. The following are the documents you need to bring with you.

Procedures to renew your status of residence
If you have a valid College Student status of residence, but it expires before the new one is issued, the following procedures must be completed at the Immigration Bureau before the expiration date. Please bring the following documents with you.

2.Part-Time Employment (continued):
继续兼职
Before you start any part-time job, you are obliged to obtain Permission to Engage in an Activity Other Than That Permitted under the Status of Residence Previously Granted (hereinafter called, Permission) at the Immigration Bureau. The following procedures must also be carried out:
Ask your academic advisor if you may engage in a part-time job, (which means whether he/she thinks that a part-time job will not interfere with your study/research).
Apply to the Immigration Bureau for permission. Permission shall be issued on the same day.
兼职之前，需要持有移民局签发的从事先前居留证允许的活动以外的其他活动的许可(以下简称许可)。必须经过以下程序：

Submit the Report of Engagement in an Activity Other Than That Permitted by the Status of Residence Previously Granted to the Gunma University Administrative Office for International Students when you start working part-time.
Re-entry Permit, in case you have plans to travel abroad and intend to re-enter Japan within the period of stay noted on your visa.
You don't need to apply for the re-entry permit since this system has been abolished in July 9, 2012. You should however return to Japan within one year.
Once your departure date is fixed, fill in the Notification of Temporary Departure before departure, inform your academic advisor and submit this notification to the Gunma University Administrative Office for International Students.
On departure, be sure to take your Residence Card to the Immigration Bureau of the international airport in Japan.
If you leave Japan temporarily during the spring break in February and March, pay your tuition for the coming year before departure. Should you return to Japan late and fail to pay your tuition by the end of March, you will be expelled from Gunma University. Please be very careful not to allow this to happen.

If your status of residence expires before the end of the academic year, make sure to carry out the necessary procedures for extension before it expires. Sophomores' students in the second year of graduate school and research students are required to pay special attention to this. Applications can be accepted from three months prior to the expiration date. Necessary documents are as follows.
Please be advised that it takes one to three weeks to have a permission issued. You cannot leave Japan until permission has been issued.

You need to contact your home country's embassy/consulate in Japan with regard to the procedures for renewing your passport before your current passport expires. However, in the Immigration Bureau, This service has been abolished since July 9, 2012.

If you have found a job, want to seek employment in Japan or are entering a graduate school or another school in Japan after graduating/completing Gunma University, the following procedures must be carried out.
1-1. Procedures to Change Status of Residence If you have found a job in Japan
Go to your nearest Immigration Bureau and follow the necessary procedures in person. Necessary documents are indicated below.
The suitability of your final education for the job will be assessed by the Immigration Bureau. You need to check with the personnel office of your workplace beforehand to confirm whether there are any documents you need to bring with you to the Immigration Bureau.
从群马大学毕业或完成课程

1-2. Procedures to Change Status of Residence (to other purposes) if you are seeking employment in Japan
Go to your nearest Immigration Bureau and follow the necessary procedures in person. Your status of residence will be Other Purposes Once the change to Temporary Visitor has been granted (indicating that you can stay in Japan for six months as a temporary visitor), you can apply for an extension for another six months.
Necessary Documents:

Certificate of Expected Graduation/Completion issued by Gunma University
Upon acquisition of the Certificate of Graduation/Completion, you must be submitted to the Immigration Bureau.
