Finances
Please take into consideration that is very difficult to finance your studies just by working during the semester breaks or during the semester.
When you apply for your residence permit you have to prove that you have sufficient financial means for your studies e.g. by showing saving accounts or through financial support from your parents.
Studying in Germany is expensive, even though living expenses in Regensburg are still quite moderate. You will need money for rent, food, tuition, and books as well as for social activities and travelling.
Financing Academic Studies
Two financial components have to be considered when planning your studies in Germany:
Tuition fees and
Cost of living
Cost of living
To receive a residence permit to study at the University of Regensburg, you must demonstrate to the Municipal Immigration Office (Auslnderbehrde) that you have enough money available to live in Germany. As a general orientation, at least 600,- per month would be accepted as proof that you have sufficient means to support yourself.
Each month you should count on the following fixed costs:
Rent: approximately 150,- to 250,-
Health Insurance: approximately 80,-
monthly broadcast fee: approx. 18,-
For a meal in the cafeteria at the University you pay around 4,-.
Each semester you should reckon on expenditures amounting to approximately 150, - to 350, - for materials for your studies (books, etc).
Each semester at the University, you additionally must pay student service fee (Studentenwerksbeitrag) in the amount of 131,- (as of: 05/2015). This student service fee includes a ticket for all bus lines in and around Regensburg (as far as Wackersdorf and Neumarkt in the North). Regional trains (SE, RB, RE) may also be used for free within certain zones with your student ID.
The University of Regensburg assumes that international students can bear all costs themselves. When applying, you confirm in a financial declaration (Finanzierungserklrung ) that you have the necessary funds available. The financial declaration also is a requirement (for non-EU citizens) to be issued a residence permit for studying.
Work and Study
Students from non-EU Countries receive no work permit in normal cases and are only allowed to work a maximum of three months (120 whole days or 240 half days) per year without a work permit. This will be entered on your resident permit in your passport.
Health Services
All international students need proof of health insurance to be able to enrol at a university as well as for their residence permit.
For several reasons you absolutely must have valid health insurance in Germany:
There are no medical facilities that are free of charge for students. If you get sick, you must go to a doctor in the city or in a hospital.
Students must have health insurance because without proof of health insurance, the University is unable to accept enrolment or re-registration (R체ckmeldung).
